Going to use this as my workbench.
- Category whitepaper
- Category:Awards, clean up to Category:Award_Orders
- Category:Awards is one of many that needs a description page. Possibly subcategorize into Tier 1, Tier 2, etc.
- Category:Change of Command merge to Category:Commissions
- What else does Category:Wiki Maintenance need?
Category Whitepaper Notes
If you have stumbled over this, know that I think better when I can type things out.
OK, so, I have been tasked to craft a Category system for Mantipedia. Done it before, for other contexts, but this one is a bit tricky.
I think the best thing to do is come at it from two directions at once:
A. To an extent, from the top down. We have Seven Bureaus. We have from 8-12 Branches/Services depending on how you break out the Civilians. We have the Board of Directors, the Steering Committee, other Committees, and the two Houses of Parliament (including the Peerages with the Lords, even though not all are Seated). Each of these has at least some small corner of Mantipedia that is about them, and some of those corners are rather large. That is potentially up to 24 "Top Level" Categories, not counting the purely administrative Categories and stuff used to keep the Wiki Running.
We need to aim for the lower end on that number if we can, and as much as possible reflect the hierarchy of the organization, for reasons both practical and aesthetic.
B. But we also need to build it from the page-level up. I want to pick some example pages from across the Wiki, reflecting the different areas, and ask: "What categories should this be in?" That will give a better idea of what the "branches" look like on the "tree", and how they intertwine. It will also let us draft an SOP for different page types.
So, what kinds:
- "Document": Policies, Orders, Directives, Advisories, we got lots of them. Honestly, might want to examine a few, these are going to be *quite* varied.
- Units. This is a little lower on the priority list, right now, but: some idea what a unit page's categories might be like.
- A Peerage page. Need to look at these more closely anyhow.
- An Award Page
- A Manual. Let's do the Marksmanship Manual, it seems to have NO categories. (This needs to come under Documents as well as the relevant Service)
- A Billet page. No, two. Let's use Bosun, and Service Head.
- Rank Page. Let's look at Brigadier General.
- An Academy page.
- A Uniform page.
- A convention page. Manticon
- Missile Pod. Why? Because it fits nowhere else. Maybe Customs and Traditions under Miscellaneous?
- A Portal page.
- Something on the Board level, one of the Committees.
Do this, and the things in the middle will quickly become obvious.
