Destroyers are fast, highly maneuverable warships designed to provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities. They are so-named because their primary role is to destroy light attack craft (LACs) before they can launch giant-killer munitions against capital ships. Thus, they're traditionally used to screen and escort larger ships like carriers and assault ships, protecting them from asymmetrical warfare.
